cost sharing, matching: Yes
number of awards: 6
type of funding: Cooperative Agreement

Applications submitted under this Area of Interest
shall focus on components,
technologies, and methods to recover the energy normally lost as exhaust
heat from internal combustion engine, exhaust gas recirculation loops, or
through heat exchangers such as the radiator, lube oil sump, etc.
approaches must be able to improve the overall engine efficiency without
increasing emissions or greatly reducing power density. Technologies
in this area must be compatible with anticipated required emission control
after-treatment devices.

Acceptable approaches include, but are not limited to:

Direct energy conversion methods, such as thermoelectrics, thermionics,
well, or other innovative concepts with potential to demonstrate conversion

efficiencies greater than 12%.

A specific target for this area is to demonstrate a minimum 10% improvement

over the base engine (e.g., from 40% brake efficiency to 44%), with no
emissions increase.
